With a reputation as The Sailing Capital of North Carolina, Oriental boasts more power and sailboats in residence than people.
Settled in 1870 and originally called Smith Creek, the name was changed when residents wanted to establish a post office. Oriental is named for the Civil War ship bearing the same name which wrecked and sank off the coast of Cape Hatteras in 1862.
Nestled amid five creeks along the Neuse River, the Town of Oriental was incorporated in 1899. It attracts boaters, artisans, writers, retirees and philosophers.
